Christianity in its purest form is not an religion, organization, or means to control people, though it has been abused as such. It is a deep relationship with a very intelligent being who's whole focus is on your welfare in His perfect plan.
People are fallen. We are broken and have inborn flaws that we can't remove or change by our own will or power. To bring life, true enjoyment into your existence, you have to first realize this fact and than learn to follow after God. The Holy Spirit is an excellent teacher and will gently work with you to change your mind set first and than work with you to become someone worthwhile from the inside out.
God doesn't care about the "outside" you. That will fade away with this world. He cares about the true you. The part unseen behind your physical appearance. That is why he tells you not to worry about clothes, food, or shelter. He provides for you and loves you dearly.
People forget what this means and get themselves wrapped up in the "rules snare". True there are laws and rules given by the Bible, but they are no different than guardrails on a highway. They are there to make sure you don't do something that will hurt or kill you. As far as dealing with people who are trapped in the "bash people with the Bible" mind set, use grace and love to melt it away. Kill with love so to speak.
