The only thing worse than not having a cigarette when you need one is not having a cigarette when you need one and having to work at the same time.
A sharp breath whistled through his clenched teeth as Riaan hefted the box of whatever over his head and to the fat guy standing in the back of the truck that they were loading. Riaan didn't know his actual birth name (the guys on the crew called him 'Ten', for reasons Riaan didn't care to delve into), but he did know that the guy was a first class idiot. Why? That wasn't important. It was his aura, or something.... Or maybe the fact that Riaan was at work and smokeless was a factor. It wasn't important.
Of course, most of the guys that worked for this particular shipping company were idiots. I seemed likely that that particular trait was one that whatever his name was up in his air conditioned office looked for when hiring.
Another box went up into the truck, and another breath whistled through his teeth. The cycle of days -- work, sleep, walk, don't die -- never ended. And he was still out of cigarettes.
The shock hit just as he was lifting another box into the waiting arms of Ten the Nameless. For a second, as he raised the box above his head, it felt as though he were cresting a wave. Then the earth beneath his feet bucked, flinging him backward into a handy fence ten or so yards away, and dropping the box on top of him with a somewhat satisfying crunch. The truck overbalanced, tipped up on two wheels, and toppled over, throwing its massive occupant up into the air before settling in a pile of dust on its side.
Riaan watched in something like a stupor as Ten dropped back to the earth, with a sickening crack as bones snapped in bad places - fifteen feet or so away.
When the ground beneath him finally settled after what had seemed like hours (though it had at the most been a few seconds), Riaan dragged himself up and out from under the box and brushed dirt from his pants, head swiveling back and forth in fruitless search for the source of the disturbance. The yard that had previously been abustle with activity was still as a graveyard, but for the few dusty workers who stood in a parody of the living dead, once-overing the place right along with Riaan.
A quick, cursory check told him that Ten was dead. Dead, and no one would remember his name. An involuntary shudder ran up Riaan's spine, and he looked away from the dead man.
"Damn. I really need a cigarette."

((Sry about the short fight, but it was hard to learn stylis on my handheld to write with it))
Brieze found himself in a dark place. He had been here before, every night when he went to sleep. This was where HE lived.
The man stood with his back to him.
"You're early. Wanted to reconsider?"
Brieze lifted his buster and replied, "You are NOT coming out, and that's final."
The man turned to look at him. A chill traveled down his spine as he looked into his own face. The man was his darker side, created by the SOLDIER programming, and his attacks to gain control were getting worse.
"Then I'll force my way out."
Brieze tightened his grip on his buster sword and ran towards 95-XE. Brieze`s darker half drew his buster and blocked a strike from Brieze`s. The sound that followed echoed to the darkest areas of his mind.
The fight for control of the body had begun, the evil side and the good side of the same person fighting for control. Neither could destroy the other, but one could be subdued.
Brieze had fought 95-XE several times, but his recent battle had weakened him.
"Getting tired already? Shame. I was hoping for a challenge," 95-XE said, tauntingly. Brieze swung his sword at 95-XE, but it was flung away with a powerful kick to his wrist.
"Why won't you leave me. alone?" Brieze yelled.
"Because I AM you."
95-XE reared his sword up and Brieze woke up. This time was too close. He won't be so lucky next time.

((More than three days have passed and noone posted. So I am.))
Brieze looked around. He was in a crater caused by the impact of the Bahamut, which was a little more than 9 yards deep.
Every bone in his body ached, but he managed to gather the strength to leap out and land on the edge of the massive hole. Looking up, he saw that the repercussions were severly destructive. He spied a semi from the corner of his eye, it was tipped over and there were bodies lying around.
Oh, pleasem, no... By killing this thing... did I cause other deaths?
He ran over to the site of the semi and saw a man over a body. The man shook his head and cursed,
"Damn, I really need a cigarette."
The voice was instantly familiar.
"Riaan? Is that you?"

((BUGGER!!! Really short post, and that's it for two weeks. Bugger.... ))
Oh. No.
Not cool, even remotely. No. It's my good twin. Sorry, go away now. Bad mood and all. Truck that is my next paycheck just tipped over, and I'm assuming it was you. Gah. So, days could get worse. It wasn't really that bad, Brieze appearing, but Riaan happened to be one of those pessimistic people that just refuse to see the good in anything. Every silver lining has a cloud, and the glass is half empty because you drank out of it, you moron.
He slid his hands into his pocket and took a couple of steps in the other direction, then reluctantly turned around. "Yeah, I suppose it must be."

Brieze looked at his pessemistic friend, anda asmall smile came to his face. A small one.
"Still have your cheery disposition, I see. I need your help. I need you to be a witness. I have solid proof that Shin-Ra Corp. is up to no good, but..."
He looked back at the crater.
"It's... very strange stuff."
He noticed the lingering glances at the body.
"Friend of yours? I'm sorry."

Rayne Skie looked at all the bodies scattered about. A part of her loved the mass slaughter and wished she had helped in it. That would have been long ago. Now since she had come to Midgar she knew everyone had their place in the lifestream. The planet will heal thanks to them. They served their part. Rayne looked up to see Brieze walk up to someone else. 'He has my number. If he needs anything he knows where to get me. But what now? There really hasn't been a huge threat.' Her fists clenched. 'Damn that Rufus. Next job he offers me he can forget it. No one stabs me in the back, not after all that i've done for him.'

Brieze looked from Riaan to Raptor.
"Raptor, this is Riaan, we're..." he tried to think of a suitable word, because he didn't want to annoy Riaan with telling the story of thier meeting.
"... aquiantences. Riaan, this is Raptor. Now that we have dirt on Shin-Ra, what do we do with it? They'd never believe us unless we can prove it."

"Right. That thing weighs more than 50 metic tons, and you want us to drag it to people who'll rather believe it came from the sky than thier beloved Shin-Ra."
The more he talked about this, the less encouraged he felt.

((I'm back. No computers in the whole of freaking Chicago. Just humidity and weirdos. Oh, well. I'm back. Schnykies. Two bloody weeks is too long.... *smacks head on wall*))
Question, questions, questions. Every other comment a question.
"Er.... " Riaan latched on to the one sentence he had really understood out of the whole exchange, and took off with it. "Dirt on Shin-Ra? This whole mess...." he indicated the truck and Ten's crumpled body "... was Shin-Ra?" All in all, Riaan really didn't have much of a problem with the company. He wasn't really a... well, a somebody, so as long as they didn't care about him, he didn't care about them. The fact of his next paycheck lying in a pile of rubble rankled a little, but that wasn't entirely his problem.
His thought process was interrupted when he caught another word. "Hold it. A Bahamut?" The world was pretty freaking weird.

Brieze arrived in Midgar, and exited the "realm." He walked over to the Seventh Heaven. To his relief, Tifa was behind the bar, and was chatting it up with the Soldier he assumed was her boy-friend. He quietly made his way to the men's room, found a large stall with a mirror, sink and toilet, and began to process his film.
The work was long and tedious, but he was able to make some decent quality pictures of the Bahamut Zion. This'll get me some points with the editor.
He collected his stuff, put the pictures in a ziplok, and ordered a beer for Riaan, some ale for Raptor, and a coke for himself.

The day being what it was, Riaan hadn't really been in a hurry to get back to Midgar. He didn't precisely take his time, either, but that was beside the point. His head and neck ached from his earlier encounter with the fence, and the night before hadn't precisely been a restful one. So he tooled around a bit, trying to clear his head, hit his appartment, stuck his head in the sink (because the air hadn't really cleared it enough), and grabbed the shotgun from under the bed (just in case), before finally making it to the establishment Brieze had named for their meeting spot.
The place wasn't really crowded, so he had no problem at all pinpointing Brieze and making his way over to where the other man had planted himself. He dropped himself into a chair, and brushed a bit of his hair out of his face before speaking. "So... what's-his-face isn't here yet?"

Brieze saw Riaan come in, a litttle late, but still here.
"Raptor, the wierd uber-guardian guy? No, not yet. I got the pictures developed. Here."
Brieze handed him six shots of the Bahamut Zion. One when it broke out of the floor of Shin-Ra's basement, and he ws sure to get thier logo in the background, the second was when it broke out of the building, the third when it was flying off, the fourth when it was charging an elelctric ball of energy to fire, the fifth when it was falling, and the last when it was dead.
"I think, tomorrow, peoepl are going to have a new prospective one Shin-Ra Corp."
Brieze smiled and took a sip of his soda.

Brieze saw Raptor come in.
"Yes, Riaan is looking at them. That Bahamut wasn't too hard to get a shot of," he whispered, not wanting to cause a panic in the other drinkers. But one bristled and turned to Brieze. He was a tall man, but not very tall, had spiky blong hair, and a wolf emblem on his shoulder. By the sword on his back, he knew he was a fellow SOLDIER.
"Bahamut? From Shin-Ra? Explain."
Brieze whispered the events of the day to the SOLDIER.
"Hmm. Rufus' been known to keep some nasty beasts, but a Bahamut? Something strange is going on, be careful."
"Ok, I will."
When a SOLDIER tells another that danger is near, it is not to be taken lightly.

Riaan looked up from the snapshots at the interruption, decided that it was none of his business, and returned to his perusal. After skimming them over for a third time, he dropped the pictures on the table near Raptor, and whistled.
"Impressive. But I've got to wonder, why? I mean, no offense to your.... " he searched for the correct word. "Talents, or anything, but all that for one guy?" His eyes were skeptical as he leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms. "It's a little hard to believe you were all they were getting at."
