Yay! I get to interview the Canadians! Mwahahaha! Ahem... Thank you for your cooperation... technically, not matter how close Canada may be to the US, geographically as well as culturally, it is a different country and therefore can be used in my report... Also, start thinking of some good Canadian recipies if you can, because that's something else we do for International Day... prepare a dish from our country of choice... So if you can think of anything...

I don't like the cold...but Niagara is cool, and that Space Needle type building you can look out from--sorry, can't remember the name.
I get it about Toronto now, cause it is so close.

(cracks up) That's exactly what I've heard some people say about the Space Needle... "You know, that CN Tower type thing over in Seattle, except it's smaller." Canadian recipes? Lessee...first thing that comes to mind... POUTINE. Looks disgusting, nay, absolutely revolting, doesn't it? Yet it is the quintessential Canadian dish, as it contains grease, starch, salt, and more grease all in one. The only way one could make it more Canadian would be to pour maple syrup over it, and we don't want to be doing that. You take some fries, put some lovely cheese curds on top, and pour gravy over the whole mess. It's something else, eh? Mmmmmmmmmmm. You could also try looking up stuff like beaver tails, prairie oysters, and Smarties, but most of the food that's here can also be found anywhere in the States as well...makes it difficult to come up with a wide range of distinctive recipes.

I've never had it...
Anyway. We live in a very Ukrainian town. This indicates, what else, Ukrainian food! Canadian people tend to congealate in little groups of various nationalities. Therefore, in my town, we eat pyrogies, cabbage rolls, lazy (it's pronounced hilopchy, and I need to get the proper spelling for it), and KUBASA!!
Kubasa is good, and I consider it very Canadian. Snrk.
I shall get you a few local recipes, however. (shifty eyes)

Thank you ever so much!
Jandalf, my mom had some questions about that... stuff... We were wondering:
What kind of gravy would that involve? By fries, do you mean French fries, like the kind you would get at a fast food resturant? Are cheese curds like cottage cheese? If so, would you use small curds or large curds (apparently they come in two different sizes... go figure!)? Does it need to be served warm?
I have the feeling there were more questions she had, but they evade me at the moment...

Yes.
...Heehee. Anyway. I've seen gravy ranging between chicken and beef-based, mostly... By fries, yes, I mean French fries. The common kind. Except it's good if they're really crispy to begin with, because then they don't get soggy in the gravy as fast. No, I do not mean cottage cheese...not quite. Cottage cheese has all that whey stuff in it...that'll make for one nasty mess of a poutine. You've got to use dry curds. I'm not entirely sure where the places I've had poutine at get it from, however, but a good place to start with would be the mildest white cheddar you can find. The stuff that squeaks between your teeth. Mmmmmmmm. But yes, the cheese curds apparently come in misshapen little lumps...
And yes, serve it warm, or the cheese won't melt, which is an unspeakable crime. The horror...
Heh. Ukrainian food is yummy...and since Ukrainians are all over the place (they're especially around the Brandon area in Manitoba), so is their food. It could definitely be considered a common way of eating... But yes, there are so many multicultural communities as well, and blends of different kinds of food...they say you can find just about any dish that exists worldwide in Toronto if you know where to look. 51% (or so I've heard) of Toronto's population consists of immigrants. Wild, eh?

Thanks for the recipe, GM, and sorry to have put you guys through such trouble, but apparently there aren't enough kids in our homeschool group interested in doing International Day, so we're not doing it this year. *is very, very, very, very, very disappointed* Well, thanks anyway. Mom still wants to try that recipe regardless... Heh... We'll let you know how it turns out.

Poutine is okay. I have had it before. You know what is even better. Canadian maple shortbread. That stuff is the best!

No, actually, but thank you for asking. Like I said before, International Day is a terribly disappointing bust this year, so I won't be doing the interviews. You can go ahead and move it.
