Here's a very basic definition: And here's a link for a more indepth description. I think Mary-Sue definitions and/or descriptions have already been posted up here and there, but I'll pop this in here anyways. Hmm... perhaps I'll double-check to see if it's in the FAQ while I'm at it.

Oh crud. Oh well. Not that I'm not happy for the winners, of course. Can we read the other people's stories?

Good on ye, post the entries up where we can see them, I really DID have an entry... I just didn't know whether you'd accept an unfinished one... ohhhhh well. Need to remove the Ha rry Potter censor. XP. And........ I disagree on the "agreed definition of a Mary-Sue". Someone go make a debate thread, but THIS is a Mary-Sue: Any character in a fanverse existing to upstage the hero characters; this does not need to be an ORIGINAL character, and dammitall, A SELF-INSERTION IS NOT AN AUTOMATIC MARY-SUE! (cough) Okay, I'm done on that one. Not yet, actually. Heh. A lot of people I have met define a Mary-Sue as any original character added to a fanverse. Yes, a lot of author-insertations are Sues. Yes, a grave deal of FEMALE OCs are Sues... I admit it, I've never saw a male self-insertation... XP. Even a canon-character romance isn't necessarily going to be a Sue! (my perspective was changed by reading a couple good books that I predicted would be Sues and weren't) I want to know this: if any time a fanfiction author makes an original character, it's a Sue, why do the EU books for Star Wars exist? It's only the character, as Jandalf noted, I guess, that exists to upstage and fulfill the egos. But self-insertations can be done... Adrienne's story, has one chapter, I'm the only person besides her who's read it to the best of my knowledge, is a very, very clear example of this. She put "herself" in, and for a self-insertation, this is going to be both serious and not effect canon whatsoever. The character is far from perfect. I read a self-insertation once, when the character was put into Middle-earth, and couldn't speak a word of the language because they spoke Westron, not Basic English. The story was INCREDIBLE. I wish it would've been finished. Mary-Sues are not just prevailant in fanfiction. Go read for me an original story and find a character that's perfect, where the villians are bumbling, where... you know. Everyone KNOWS what I mean; the cardboard cutout character template that usually saves the day... Sorry. I'm done. Great work to the winners! I may post up my entry one day anyway... (sigh) Because I had put a lot of effort into background for that story, even if the only goal was to murder off as many Middle-earthians as possible.

Sues are out of style right now. I think the idea, and then the joke, have fallen by the way side.
I say that whomever wants to post their entry, winner or not, can do so here themselves.

T, your basic point is be original so you're not a stereotype ie Sue, right? That's what I'm reading it as ... I'm not saying a stereotype IS a Sue, but most female stereotypes ARE Sues. Haughty rebellious princess: read: Sue. The thing is, most people are more accepting of Mary Sues in original literature... and for me, I'd rather see a fanfiction Sue than a published cardboard, horrible, overdone female original character who gets all the guys swooning over her, can do everything perfectly, has this awesome singing voice, is half unicorn... Just because it's original doesn't mean she's not a Sue. And, likewise, just because someone does a self-insertation into a fandom, doesn't mean they're a Sue. I'm sorry. I've just had so many issues with people who think because it's original that they can do a character who's the sole fulfiller of a prophecy and can do all this stuff even though they're not trained and and and... Yeah. Originality.

Ew. *shuddershuddershudder* That one's been done so many times, it makes me sick. BAAAD. It's ok. I'm just a little fuzzy on the concept of sues - I mean, I know what they are, I just have a hard time putting it into words.
