I think this belongs here...
This was a recent comment concerning my Mary-Sue fanfiction.
"Anyone for getting Lord Voldemort in here and showing the author what evil truly is?
On a side note, Hook could totally take down a Sith lord, if you took away the Sith lord's lightsaber. Like Palpatine, or Anakin Skywalker. Hook could take them."
First I would like to say that Voldemort is hardly 'true evil'. Voldemort is afraid of his own death and only craves power.
Now Satan would be too obvious for a comparison and unlike Voldemort is real. Therefore I shall compare Voldemort's evil to that of manga character "Legato" from Trigun.
Legato cares nothing for his life and the life of others, destroying and tormenting all he desires to. Legato cares nothing of power over and among humans for her already can slaughter two whole armies with one shot. In fact one might say Legato cares for nothing. Legato also fears nothing.
Voldemort on the other hand is afraid of death and cares for his own life.
Voldemort, 'true evil' in the literary world? I don't think so. He's nothing more than Hitler was and Hitler can hardly be described as 'true evil'. Bad, yes. Evil, no.
And now concerning the destruction of a Sith. Even robbed of their lightsaber a Sith Lord is not without power. Their knowledge and ability to use the Force grants them safety from People who cannot use the Force. And even against the Jedi a Sith has Darkside lightning. There is no way Captain Hook could take down a Sith with or without a lightsaber. As much as I like Captain Hook, there is really know way he could match the power of the Darkside.

Voldemort, I think, pretty much covers what Satan is like. Satan fears for the safety of his kingdom and his 'life' all he wants to do is see us suffer as much as possible. I think Satan is truly evil, and since Voldemort is like him, I would say he was evil as well. maybe not pure evil, but evil, nonetheless.

I didn't say voldemort wasn't evil I'm just saying he isn't the ultimate in literary evil.

Volde is the corrupt self - doesn't want to admit he's afraid, therefore he seeks power to make him not afraid. In a way, he's afraid of death because it's the only thing that can control him.

Speak English, I do not. *cackles*
Basically, Volde's afraid of death b/c it's the only thing he can't influence or control. Anyhting else he can, or get the power to do so. But death he can't, so he's looking for the power to do it, by any means possible... So he's not evil, he's just afraid. OK, he's evil BECAUSE he's afraid.

Fear and evil come hand-in-hand, really... I don't actually know who Volde is, though. *hides from darksider wrath*

HP Vol.demort. «bypasses annoying censors»
And I'd just like to say that, due to my weird fascination with Legato, I'd have to agree with you. But that's it, because it's the end of finals week and my brain has transformed to a lump of coal. «shouts» THERE, MR. KOCH!!! ALCHEMY DOES EXIST!!!!

Any decent Sith could destroy Cpt. Hook with the Force, and probably with physical prowess too. Of course we are, snrk... I don't particularly care about Voldy for the moment. A lot of baddies are looking for something and that's why they appear evil; they look to the exclusion of all else, usually for power. Lord Sidious seeks power. So what do you count as true evil? Satan is because he was rather supernaturally granted it. I think.

Evil has no unique definition. Evil is the mirror of good.
