This has bothered me ever since I watched the EE of RotK. When Aragorn looked into the Palantir and then suddenly backed away he Evenstar seemed to drop and break. However, in the scene where they're in front of the Black Gates he has it again. Did Pj mess up? Is he trying to confuzzle us? Did the Evenstar not really break?

I think it was either part of the palantir vision or Sauron trying to mess with Aragorn.

I think it was part of the Palantiri vision... which I just spelt as Palpatine. *smacks forehead*

He actually had a dream about it breaking in TTT, while he was on top of that big flat hill.

The one in Rohan? Yeah, I think it might have been a mistake. I mean, its a big movie and with so many details, who's to say that this one might have been overlooked?

Sauron tends to do that. either that or he takes away the tragic hero's anti-depressants, lol.

I thought it was quite smart of Sauron to do that. A bit puerile ("Yeah, well, so what if you defeat me? Your girlfriend's DYING! Nya-na-na-na-na!") but smart.

Um...um... (indecision)
I noticed the same thing, and I came up with two theories: Sauron messing with Aragorn's head, or a vision combined with the symbolic statement that Arwen's giving up her right to hitch a ride over to the West. So... (ponders) I think I'll go with the latter, even though Sauron's that kind of eye. Heh. Because he isn't omniscient, and he can't affect everything whenever he wants to. That much is proven.

Maybe Arwen was napping and Sauron decided to show Aragorn to mess with his head?

Heh heh heh. Well, it would be tempting, I'll say that much.

It must be pretty boring, being a floating eye. I wouldn't be surprised if he did it for giggles.

I think that, in the original cut, it was supposed to have broken then. But they weren't sure whether they were going to keep that bit or not, so they had Aragorn wearing it at the Black Gate, and thought if they kept it they could erase it digitally. And lo, it wasn't in the original movie, so they left it, and forgot to erase it in the extended edition.
Or maybe Aragorn felt bad about smashing it and quickly ordered a replica off e-bay so Arwen wouldn't find out.
