This was the full explanation my friend provided:
The Kessel Run passes through an area of space known as "the Maw" (an artificially created mass of black holes) which distorts space so much that a spaceship can't safely pass too close and therefore needs a massive detour.
Hence, there's a lot of kudos for whoever can do the Kessel Run in the shortest distance, ie with the least detour. It shows a strong ship and a fearless crew.
