I'm trying to get this thread moving so I'm going to explain my answer even if everyone already knows why the answer is a man.
A man walks on four legs in the morning (in infancy or the beginning of his life) on two legs in the afternoon (middle aged) and three legs in the evening (an old man with a cane).
Any takers for my riddle? Can no one answer it?
