Chapter 1.
Alex Thomas was an important man. At just thirty-three, he was already a member of the upper echelons of a very large group of people. He was even predicted to become the next President of the Society- the youngest ever. With his dark hair and defined cheekbones, he was often regarded as good-looking, and his funny, intelligent personality never failed to please. But, as often happens with people who have everything, Alex couldn't help thinking it was all too good to last. The confident persona he used for public speaking was simply a mask to hide his quivering, self-effacing self. And whilst the few people who knew his real attitude toward his success still liked and admired him, Alex lived in fear of the day his facade was ripped away and everyone saw what a fake he really was.
One of the people who understood Alex's nervous disposition was Jeff. Jeff Winterbourne was a 17-year-old, 6'3" monster of a man with broad shoulders and the kindest personality Alex had ever encountered. He was essential in Alex's life. He looked like a bodyguard, acted like an assistant and spoke like an aristocrat. No-one really knew where he came from, and nobody ever asked- members of the Society appreciated privacy, and Jeff's assertive nature meant that if someone had asked him about his background and he hadn't wanted to answer, he could smoothly move on to a new topic without any hindrance.
Now, however, he was looking confused. "Are you sure this is the right place?" he asked. Alex understood the confusion. They were standing in front of suburban heaven, a neat square little house with a square garden and square windows and brightly coloured curtains. Neither Alex nor Jeff imagined that the man they were looking for would live somewhere like this. Alex checked the piece of paper in his pocket, then shrugged. "It's the right address." He looked at the house, unsure of what to do next. Should he call the Matthew, or the President, or one of the other Deputies, to make sure it was right, or should he use his initiative and walk straight in? Alex wasn't a particularly career-minded person, but he knew that there were some people within the society who thought that he couldn't do his job. He was just about to move away from the hedge behind which they were hiding, when Jeff pulled him back. "Mr. Thomas, look! There's someone coming!" Alex looked up, and walking down the road was someone he would never have expected to be approaching this residence. He had never seen her before in his life, but he was sure she would cause problems.
Walking down the street was a teenage girl. She had long blonde hair and earphones in her ears. She was wearing a school uniform and carrying a rucksack. "What's he doing with a daughter?" Alex asked Jeff. This wasn't part of the plan. "Maybe she's his girlfriend." replied Jeff. Alex raised his eyebrows. "Men his age don't have girlfriends her age." he told Jeff, who shook his head. "No offense, sir, but what planet are you living on? It's perfectly possible."
Alex shrugged, and returned his gaze to the girl, who had already walked across the grass. She opened the door and walked in, forgetting to shut it. Alex thought of sharing an adult moment, muttering "teenagers" with a displeased face, but then he realised that his companion was one. A few seconds later, Alex and Jeff got the shock of their life when they heard a blood-curdling, ear-piercing scream.
