... That was a touch of sarcasm, Tiana..... I know you can't resist making ME:I more efficient and acessible. My first day of work was awesome! My trainer and co workers are really nice and helpful. My trainer was especially fun. I know how to check in, check out, renew, holds, ILLs, Open and Bio special cases, cash drawer, checks, the cart, the doors, the places I never knew about, shelving... it's quite fun. I'm really looking forward to next week.

Here is what I need y'all to critique. It's a SPEECH. It needs to be READ ALOUD. Adn it needs to SOUND GOOD. But I just want your comments on the content, not the flow. Structure, OK, how it sounds, not really. I'll work that out so it suits me. Altho, if you have an awesome idea or suggestion, speak up. Thanks guys!
Something Completely Unexpected
Has anyone heard of Monty Python's Flying Circus? Insane, aren't they? Who in their right mind would get up in front of people and sing about crossdressing lumberjacks? It would embarass the heck out of me. It's not easy to get up in front of people and do anything, but to do something that makes you look incredibly stupid? That takes a lot of guts. Those ridiculous enteratiners must have had alot of self confidence. But what can us mere respectable mortals do with self confidence? We're not going to be selling albatrosses anytime soon. Why should self confidence be important to us?
Well, what is self confidence? Confidence is defined as consiousness of one's powers and belief that one will act in a proper and effective way. So self confidence is feeling you know what you can do, and will act the right way in a given situation.
Being self confident is incredibly important for us mere mortals because when you're confident in what you can do, you're more comfortable with yourself and you feel yyou can do your best because you're prepared. Others will notice you more because you show your confidence through your actions. Ifyou're trying out for a musical, and you sing quietly or you can't recover when you screw up or get all shaky because you don't think you'll get the part, you're definitely not getting a lead rrole. But if you stand up and sing out and feel confident in yourself, no matter how nervous you really are, you just may be the star of the show. Same in a job interview - you don't seem confident, appear nervous and unsure and they won't think you can handle the work. But if you walk in with your head held high and looking confident, you just mat have that job. It works with tests too - feeling you know the subject, you've done your best studying, and you 'll do well. So self confidence can help us in your every day lives.
Karate promotions often claim to improve self confidence. Why? Because of the discipline involved. Discipline is a major part of self confidence. Discipline is something you need throughout your life, for work, play , anything. You have to work at learning, training for that event, whatever it may be. You have to learn how to set goals and be flexible so you can do the best you can and have time for fun as well. Once you know what working toward one goal involves, you can apply that to any other goal you need to achieve. Try doing things no one else does, but you just might enjoy - it doesn't have to be karate. No matter what, do not give up. Just keep at it, make mistakes, learn from them , and keep going. In time, your thing might become 'cool'. It takes time and effort to really become disiplined.
To really be self confident, you have to look at yourself. Really. Pull out a mirror and really look at yourself until your eyes hurt. Sure, you don't like all of what you se. Zits, blackheads, pimples, earlobes, cheekbones, eyes. Personallly, I hate my nose - it's absolutely huge and it gets even bigger when I have a cold. It's the same on the inside too - so we've all done things we wish we hadn't. And sure, we're lazy a lot, spend too much time on the internet when we should be studying. And sometimes we're really overpowering when we shouldn't be, or we like to think we're king of the world, or we're really shy, or have another annoying trait. But hey, when you look hard enough, you can find ytou rstrenghts and weaknesses and work on them. You don't have to love yourself to know what you're dealing with and put it to work - you just have to accept it.
So, you're different. Aren't we all? I mean, I'm not you, right? Because if I was you, I wouldn't be me, and you sure wouldn't be you. You'd be both me AND you, and that sure wouldn't be fun. Because, maybe you like to play hockey. I like hockey, hockey's cool. To watch. I have no compulsion to get slammed into walls anytime soon. So if I was you, you wouldn't be playing hockey. Everyone has their own tastes. So maybe the in thing right now is rrock music - the kind you can't understand a word to - and hip leather jackets. But you prefer country and courduroy. That's you. You have to be willing to stand out and do your own thing, be it punk rock, wearing white after labor day, or taking acedemic tests for fun.
And the cool kids are going to make fun of you. Oh boy, they will. Your clothes, your hair, your background - anything is game. That's the number one killer of self confidence - ridicule. You have to work extra hard to regrow all that self confidence. What kills it even faster is when you listen to that ridicule and believe, yeah, you are no good, and yeah, you're never going to amount to anything because you're too different and certainly way too uncool. That's the worst thing you can do to your self confidence. It's like taking the sunshine away from a plant. It just shrivels, unless you let the light back in. You have to decide what's more important - respecting yourself because you're worth it? Or repsecting them, because you want ot be part of the cool crowd? That question decides your attitude toward your self confidence.
Now that you know what it is, share self confidence by reaching out to the kid always there, but no one ever talks to, aside to tease, because they're the oddball, the new kid, or they're just too different. You'd be surprised how many kids say thaey's stick up for the one being picked on. Guess what? Barely any of them do. Durign a discussion, a good half of my youth group said they'd stand up for the oddball. Well, the odd ball was sitting right there, and they just kept teasing me because I was homeschooled and my clothes weren't in style. Actions really do speak louder than words. One kid stood up for me. That one kid helped me become self confident. It's like a cold - you got it, now pass it along.
Like a precious treasure, self confidence is sought for by many, but only found when one is not looking for it. Believe it or not, this treasure is not found in some potion or elixir, not hidden naway in some high misty mountain, rather, it's right there inside of you. You can feel it when you've done a good job on a test, really helped someone, when you've done something incredibly hard and kept working at it until you got it right, no matter how many tries it took. It's that little glow you get - the 'hey, I can do this!' feeling. The idea of 'I like this. I can do this.' Like that ten thousand pound weight suddenly dropping, self confidence comes when you least expect it, but once you know it's there and you keep watering it , it blossoms. Once that happens, even the unexpected is within reach.

I really like your candid approach here. It's the kind of style I appreciate in a speaker, where it feels as though they're talking one-on-one instead to a wide audience. Also, it doesn't antagonise the "in-crowd" even while it works to lift the heads of the geeks and outcasts in general. It's laid out well, in my opinion, and follows through with itself nicely...the only thing I'd recommend is maybe a little bit of clarification with the idea of a loss of identity at the beginning of the sixth paragraph where it talks about "me being you" and vice-versa. Nicely done, and I wish I could hear it!

I like clarity in my speakers too, and a one on one approach. Glad you like it too! The judges did as well, so I'm headed to the State level. I actually had several ppl come up to me and say that they're glad their kids heard this (as they'd been thru something similar) and know that it's defeatable. That was really ... something. It'll be clarifyed and cleaned up before June. .... I should put a sound byte of it up. If I only had the tech. *egotism* Thanks guys, glad you liked it! I LOVE the library!! So... I'm going loaded down? I'll get used to it. It'll be fun. Can't wait for Tuesday!!!

It went over well. Heh, I wrote it in a day, so it's not great. It needs some clearing and editing. If you want, I'll put up the next version (Speech 2.0 ) When I'm done with it.

Anyhoo. Long time. I reworked t3h sp33ch. Much better now. State is next weekend - wish me luck! Now to practice. Has anyone else noticed how many clone looking people there seem to be? So far, over the last 3 months or so, I have seen 4 perfect Jango clones - and they're all different people!! And they all creep me out. More randomosity to ponder.... Out.

Commander's log: Stardate: ...uh The day after yesterday.
State was a major sucess - I placed in the top 4 seniors out of about... 30? or so? Yeah.... I also got to MC the Awards Ceremony - major honor. They love me!
Work has worn off the fun, although it's still good. A bit dull and mean now.
My college class is GREAT, even with all the %$^& papers we have to write. It's an english comp course, so you have to write papers.... The teacher is awesome - very enthusiastic, very alive, very helpful. Just awesome!
chalk up another Jango clone - saw one at the college. Tally so far: 1 in grocery store 1 is a priest with glasses 1 is an UPS man (dude was a great driver ) Another was.... something and 1 is a student The many shades of Jango are coming out....
Other: The Stay puft marshamllow man - I kid you not Jack Aubrey Professor Slughorn Luke and Ben Han Solo and Kyp Durron Count Dooku
So far, so good...
Over and out.

One Part Being: The Sovereign LORD is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to go on the heights.
The Second Part Being: P.S. To whomever ends up directing this psalm in the next Sunday School presentation, use the violin in the back closet.

That's what I thought... Still.... If it was in the Bible, they had violins in the back closet in 2000BC? I never knew that...
