Hi! I was talking to Eowyn Skywalker last night on Yahoo and she said that I could post this new contest here! Its a bit different but really fun! Really! I collect postcards. I have LOTS of them from around the world. So I'm going to put a picture here and you'll have to tell me WHERE it is! There will be new photos posted to start new contests, so the excitement will continue! Example: I post a photograph of New York City. You should say its New York, New York USA. Get it? But sometimes I may require MORE from you .. like if its a really famous building, place or structure. Then I'd want the NAME and LOCATION. Example: Iffle Tower: Paris, France. You'll get the hang of it soon! I'll get a photo up soon..... And yes, you may have to search for an answer... ~ Smenzer

I can't remember what the statue's name is, but I think that's in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Congratulations, Thorongil! Yes, its Rio de Janerio in Brazil. The statue is called Christ Redemptor and that little hill in the background (the one shaped like a gumdrop) is called Sugar Loaf. I may have to come up with a harder one next time. I'll mail you a little prize soon... ~ Smenzer

Thorongil: I am emailing you your prize. If you have a webpage you can put it there. I hope you like it! I am putting up a new photo to start another contest. If no guesses it inside of a week I'll tell everyone where it is and start another contest. OK? This is a 'natural formation' and the only one like it in the world of this size. Can anyone tell me its name? The site is polular for a certain type of sport... Have fun!!! ~ Smenzer

That would be an atoll...there's a group of islands in the Indian Ocean, I believe, that have especially amazing ones. Just a guess, as I'm not much into the scene, but I do recall that atolls have remarkable coral/whatnot formations, so I would suppose they would be marvellous places for diving.

Hi Jandolf! Well, you're part way right. That outer ring you see is made of coral. And it is part of an atoll ... but its not your NORMAL atoll. Not all of it is made from coral - there is another rock involved. It's not anywhere near the Indian Ocean. And yes, its very popular for diving! The part in the middle is over 400 feet deep. Many of the people diving there are researchers. Would you care to guess again? The dark area in the center of the atoll has a specific name. ~ Smenzer

(smacks forehead) That's odd, because I just remembered the name: Malé, in the Maldives. That's where I THOUGHT the largest atoll was.
So out of curiosity I looked it up.
Therefore, I'm supposing I'm confused again. Anyway, the central part of an atoll is the lagoon, where the volcanic rock has sunk down to form a bowl-like structure. Hmm...I believe that's everything...

Hey Jandolf, Well, this isn't volcanic rock. Volcanic rock is either basalt, obsedion, pumice.... and yes, I read that on atolls is creates a lagoon filled with sea water. What you're seeing on the photo is a LIMESTONE cave. The divers, when they go diving inside it, are actually swimming around stalagtites (the ones that grow from the ceiling). The area was actually once above ground. Then the sea came in and the cave's ceiling collasped - creating what you see. There are actually tunnels down there, some just recently discovered. Hope this helps you guess!! ~ Smenzer

(smacks forehead again) You know what? That's really cool! But I've never heard of such an occurrence before. So I'm going to let someone else have a go at it. Heh.

Would it be Glover's Reef Atoll? I'm not very good at this 'round the world stuff, but it is listed as the largest atoll in the northern hepmisphere, so I thought I'd take a shot at it.

Hi Shadow! I'm so glad you're trying the contest because you're SOOOOO close to winning! YES, it's in the Northern Hemisphere! And you even have the right COUNTRY! Glover's reef atoll is in the country BELIZE and that's where the photo is from! This particular formation is a lot deeper than Glover's Reef.. Now all you have to do is a search on Belize and I'm sure you'll find the name very easy! Its probably the most famous spot in Belize... So everyone be nice and give Shadow a chance to find the name... They'll be lots more postcard contests to win in the upcoming weeks! Smenzer

Oh, cool, I was close.
Let's try Turneffe Atoll for a name, then? There's a lot of atolls in that country, seemingly...

The word "Atoll" is not in the name.
The name is 2 words. Both words are 4 letters long.
Its a popular tourist destination. Any good webpage should have it listed.
Try again!

OK, since no one can guess the water related photo, I'm closing that contest. The correct answer was the BLUE HOLE. Sometimes it's called "The Great Blue Hole" and its located in the country of Belize. Here is some info on it: ""Approximately 60 miles (100 kilometers) from Belize City, the almost perfectly circular Blue Hole is more than 1,000 feet (305 meters) across and some 400 feet (123 meters) deep. The hole is the opening to what was a dry cave system during the Ice Age. When the ice melted and the sea level rose, the caves were flooded, creating what is now a magnet for intrepid divers. Today the Blue Hole is famed for its sponges, barracuda, corals, angelfish—and a school of sharks often seen patrolling the hole’s edge. A blue hole is essentially formed when a roof collapses over a cavern and is subsequently filled with water. Geological structures in the Great Blue Hole of Belize are important because they initially can only form in air, when caverns are dry and above sea level. Evidence for the maximum lowering of sea level during successive ice ages over the past several millions of years is sparse. Due to its impressive appearance and mystique the Great Blue Hole was established as a World Heritage Site by the United Nations. "" www.ambergriscaye.com/pages/town/bluehole.htmlwww.ambergriscaye.com/pages/town/greatbluehole.htmlOK, here is the NEW photo for the next postcard contest! So everyone start guessing! For this one you need to tell me the NAME of the mountain and WHERE it is. It really shouldn't be that hard (but I won't say why). I'm curious if anyone knows .... ~ Smenzer

And we have a WINNER!!!!! Yes, it's Mount Saint Helens. I picked it because it was in the news recently, as I'm sure you know! You can tell me about the photographer if you want to, but its not required to win the prize. The last photograph (the Blue Hole) was too hard for anyone to guess. I'll mail you the prize tomorrow, OK? And now I shall start a NEW postcard contest!
